What To Know About Phillies #1 Pick: Mickey Moniak

  • Mickey Moniak is an 18 year-old Center Fielder hailing from Encinitas, California.
  • His Birthday is May 13th, 1998.
  • Played his High School Ball at La Costa Canyon High School, a California Prep school located in Carlsbad CA.
  • Since his Freshmen year, Moniak has had a slot on the Varisty team, not playing much Freshmen year but became an everyday player his sophomore year.
  • Moniak stands at 6"3 and weighs 190 lbs., while batting left and throwing right.
  • Last Summer Moniak was able to showcase his talent in the Rawlings Perfect Game All-American Classic.
  • In the Fall Mickey played a pivotal part in the US winning gold at the 2015 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Japan.
  • Named the 2015-2016 Gatorade Player of the Year in the State of California.
  • Moniak had committed to UCLA but with being Drafted #1 overall by the Phillies it seems as if he will forego his college career to head straight to the pros.
  • Word on the street is that Mickey's Grandfather, Bill Moniak, was in the Boston Red Sox Farm system where his hitting instructor was one of the All-Time greatest hitters in Baseball history: Ted Williams.
According to Maxpreps.com, Moniak's career numbers at La Costa Canyon HS are as follows:

Career GP Avg PA AB R H RBI
Varsity 106 0.444 403 351 105 156 105

Career 2B 3B HR BB K OBP SLG
Varsity 22 19 9 13 6 0.54 0.942
  •  What should be highlighted is Moniak's Senior Season.  In 29 games he had a .476 batting average while hitting 4 Doubles, 12 Triples, 7 Home Runs, and 46 in RBI's.  Moniak was also able to steal 11 bases.
  • His MLB projection is to be a top of the lineup everyday CF who will hit for average and cover a great amount of ground in Center.
  • Moniak's game is solid all around, being able to do almost everything well.  Terrific Defense, great speed in the field and on the base paths, puts the ball in play making a lot of contact, but lacks power which could come in time but I wouldn't expect him to put up 40 Home Run seasons.
  • MLB comparisons: OF Christian Yelich (Miami Marlins) and OF Jacoby Ellsbury (New York Yankees).
  • Don't be alarmed because the comparison is not the likes of a Bryce Harper, Yelich is a very young, up and coming player who is in the middle of a breakout year and Ellsbury in his prime in Boston was fun to watch and put up great numbers.
  • This is going to sound crazy and I am not being delusional but I do hope and think there is a small chance Mickey Moniak could be a poor mans version of Los Angeles Angels star Outfielder Mike Trout if he can bulk up and add some power.
The future is very bright for the Philadelphia Phillies and after last night it got even brighter.  The Phillies have not had a solid outfield since essentially the 2008 World Series club.  I believe Moniak and Triple-A OF Nick Williams, who was acquired last year from the Texas Rangers, will make up two-thirds of what could be one of the best outfields in baseball in the coming years.
